HONOLULU (2013)— The 2013 Hawaii 5210 Keiki Run presented by Kaiser Permanente is set to commence on February 16, 2013. The 1.5 mile untimed race, will be a flat course starting and ending at the Great Aloha Run Expo at the Neal Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall on Ward Avenue, circling around historic McKinley High School – right on King St., right on Pensacola, right on Kapiolani Blvd., and finally, right on Ward Avenue to the Finish Line.

Last year’s Run held on February 18, 2012 raised $29,000 with 100% of the race entry proceeds going back to the schools to support their PE, physical activity and nutrition education programs. Nearly 1450 elementary and preschool aged students and their parents from 89 schools participated in the run. Community partners for the Hawaii 5210 Keiki Run are Kaho’omiki, Hawaii 5210, Let’s Go! Initiative, HAPHERD—Hawaii Association for Health, PE, Recreation & Dance, Hawaii Action For Healthy Kids, Hawaii Education Matters, and PSE—Pacific Sport Events & Timing.

Dr. May Okihiro, Waianae Coast Comprehensive Center Pediatrician, and HICORE Director participated in the 2012 Keiki Run with her two children and said, “The event was AWESOME! The healthy food, the demonstration groups, the coordination… The excitement was great! There were many compliments from parents and teachers. Mr. Noh, principal from Lanikai Elementary was impressed and plans to send a bigger team next year. I want to thank the community partners for their energy and enthusiasm in promoting H5210, the DOE Wellness Guidelines and activating families and communities to live healthy.”

The Hawaii 5210, Lets Go! Keiki Run is held to promote 5210, a healthy living message which encourages behaviors associated with healthy weight in children—5 or more fruits and vegetables, 2 hours or less of screen time, 1 hour or more of physical activity and no (0) sugary beverages each day. Hawaii 5210 Lets Go! is an initiative to promote healthy eating and active living, and to prevent childhood obesity in Hawaii through a coordinated, collaborative, locally relevant health education campaign. Hawaii 5210 is based at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics and is led by HICORE, the Hawaii Initiative for Childhood Obesity Research and Education.
