The new study, published in Pediatrics Obesity found kids ate 200 extra calories a day when diet beverages were consumed. In fact, the same amount of calories per day were taken in by kids drinking regular sodas.

The lead researcher from the study, Dr. Allison Sylvetsky, from the George Washington University says, "Our findings suggest that water be recommended as the best choice for kids and teens."

The main facts from the study outlined the following for the children (by bodyweight and compared to water drinkers):

  • Diet beverage drinkers were up an extra 196 calories per day
  • Sugary soda drinkers were up an extra 312 calories per day
  • Combined diet and regular drinks were up 450 extra calories per day

Sylvetsky recommends both kids and adults should drink more water and try alternatives like sparkling water with a splash of fruit juice for extra flavor.
